Assignment:
- When you have created your version of the 311 Data Analysis App, post the link to your GPT on Canvas along with your final instructions for the GPT. Remember, this is a proof of concept. A production model would likely include additional data sets such as:
- Demographic data for Boston, enabling you to map incidents to neighborhoods and community characteristics
- Police data
- Traffic data
- Other relevant datasets
- Reflect on your past work experiences. Do you anticipate these no-code apps will impact office work in the future? (Keep in mind that the technology will likely improve.) Consider your own work history—can you identify any tasks that could have been automated using this approach, even with the current level of technology?

Objectives for this assignment:
- Introduce you to the capability of ChatGPT to create no code apps (this is a very simple example)
- After you create your MVP as a poof of concepts, ask you to think about the implications of this for knowledge work going forward (again, remember this technology will only improve)
Instructions
As many of you already know, your ChatGPT accounts allow you to create custom apps without any programming. In this assignment, I'll guide you through creating a simple app (if you can think of something more complex you'd like to automate, that might make a good course project or paper).
As a starting point think of what you will be creating as a Minimum Viable Product (remember our discussion of this concept in the Singapore case).

A minimum viable product (MVP) is a simple version of a product that’s released to validate the concept. The goal of an MVP is to learn as much as possible with minimal effort.

The app you create will be based on the earlier assignment: Case: Learning to Prompt -Navigating 311 Data with AI on Your First Day of Work - [DRAFT - Work In Progress (August 2024) ]
The Mayor was very impressed with John's work on the 311 Data. However, John isn't thrilled about being known solely as "the 311 Data Analytics guy." To expand his skills and create a more versatile tool, he's decided to develop a GPT. GPTs enable users to create custom versions of ChatGPT, combining specific instructions, additional knowledge, and various skills—essentially forming a basic, specialized app.
These are the steps to take to help John out with this:
- It is probably worth a few minutes to reread the original case to remind yourself of the context.
- Download the 311 Data file and the Data Dictionary from the original case onto your desk top
- Go to the upper right click on the account bubble:
- Next click on My GPTs and you should see something like the below:
- Click on Create a GPT and you will see something like the following:
- Click on Configure and you will see this
- Next, upload the two files and ensure you check the boxes for Code Interpreter and Data Analysis. Name your GPT (I'm using "City of Boston 311 Data Analyst"). In the description, write something like: "This GPT analyzes data for the Mayor's Office in the City of Boston." Then, you'll need to provide instructions. A minimal set might look like this:
- OK make your first request ask it (right side of the screen) ask it to: Please provide A line chart showing the total number of 311 requests over each month of 2023
- In the upper right click create and make sure anyone with the link box is clicked, and click save to create and save your first GPT
